Long before I became a travel writer I went on many trips and took vacations. Some big, some small. If it wasn’t for photographs I’d forget way more than I already have of such trips. After all, I wasn’t the type to keep notes of a place or write in a journal, but I loved photography. Take this trip to Southern France for example. I’ve long since forgotten the name of this village, but have the photo to remind me of its charm. On subsequent trips, I’ve learned to take pictures of a sign at the entrance of the town to help remember the name. With so many past trips, old memories long forgotten, I need a camera to help me remember details.

On that trip we went to a village below the famous Cirque de Navacelles. This ancient Stonehenge like arrangement of standing stones is much smaller than its more famous version in England, but memorable just the same. After all, how often do you see standing stones five thousand years old?

Shoot often
My advice to you is, digital film is cheap, so take lots of photos. Make sure you shoot a sign at the entrance of a town or place, or restaurant menu name to remind you of where you were. You be glad you did some ten or twenty years in the future when you might have forgotten that place you thought you would never forget.

Pay heed you, lucky travelers, if you take lots of photos the chances of forgetting the details of the trip dimish. Try editing the photos on the flight home and you won’t have to take valuable time for such tedious work. In the end, I hope you savor your journeys while on the ground and for years after the trip is done.
