This time of year my thoughts of summer vacations start drifting northward in anticipation of our annual fishing trip to Alaska. Every trip brings new memories and experiences and this year’s trip promises more of the same. I’ve been extremely fortunate to be able to go up 19 out of 20 summers for business and pleasure. I always bring back plenty of fresh-caught seafood and great memories. Each year seems to be getting warmer and sunnier. Although this warmer weather doesn’t bode well for the environment we do enjoy being able to enjoy outdoor dining at our usual cabin rental. Come with me and see why summer vacations in Alaska are a highlight of my year.
It may be a long trip up to Alaska for most, but with land, sea and air options for traveling, there is bound to be a method that fits your situation. All it takes is a bit of planning and willingness to get creative. One way we have been able to go up so many summers is by sharing a cabin, car and expenses to bring the price down. If you get an Alaska Air Visa card one of the rewards is an annual companion ticket that makes flying affordable. Bottom line is; if you want to go badly enough you will find a way.
Here are some of my favorite photos of past trips to edge you on.
Alaska is huge and there is someplace just right for your vacation. If you need any help visiting any these places, post questions using the comment function and I’ll help in any way I can. Alaska is waiting for you to come on up.

My family did an Alaska trip in 2007 which I will never forget. We took ferries from island to island. My best friend now lives way up north, and I am afraid to visit her when there is snow. The problem is that she just had a baby, who I want to see very badly, and I don’t think I can wait til summer. Do you have any advice for taking a trip during the fall?
Kurt says
Travel during the snow season is safer than ever and there are no bugs. If you would like to go in the fall it’s still a good time as the colors are spectacular and the Norther Lights start showing up. How far north is your friend? Once I know where I can make travel suggestions.

Nice! Mendenhall Glacier is one of my favorite spots to hike in Alaska, even though I didn’t go there for half a decade now 🙁

Indeed it is a great place to hike. Good thing there’s lots of photos of the glacier for those of us that don’t get to visit often.
