Washington DC is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the Mid-Atlantic region. On each visit I find new places and experiences that keep me coming back for more. I rarely spend the night since it only takes an hour and a half to drive home, but on this latest trip we spent 28 hours in DC on a hot an humid weekend. It was a blast.

On the first afternoon I grabbed the camera and walked around the area to see what to shoot. At the Indonesian Embassy I spied this cool sculpture.

A couple of minutes later I looked across the street and who did I see but Mahatma Gandhi himself strolling Massachusetts Avenue. Okay, so it was just a statue of the famous leader of India, but very cool all the same.

It was hot and humid when I passed by the Brewmasters Castle. You can bet I was thinking a cold beer sounded good at that point in my walk.

With dinner approaching rapidly I passed on a cold beer and my wife and I took a taxi to Oyamel, Jose Andres Mexican restaurant on 7th Street. A Sangrado Corazon cocktail awaited us to quench our thirst followed by the best chips and salsa I’ve had in quite a while. With only 28 hours in DC we wanted to hit the best restaurants possible and any Jose Andres restaurant fits the bill.

To match the chips and salsa we ordered guacamole which our waiter Amir prepared tableside. It was so good we wiped every little green bit of it from the bowl by the time the next course came around.

Dish after dish of tasty Mexican food paraded across our table as each new offering disappeared shortly after delivery. Although there was no room for dessert, when I heard they had passion fruit sorbet I ordered some out of curiosity. It was perfect for a finishing touch. The explosion of tart, tropical fruit washed away the spice, garlic and onion flavors from the meal and left us feeling like a cat who ate a bag full of mice.
For something new and different we hit the Newseum the next day. I figured an hour or two would suffice. Wrong! Three hours later I pulled myself out of there to beat the traffic home to Baltimore. With over three thousand motorcyclists in the city for Operation Rolling Thunder, there were a few more obstacles to getting out of DC than usual.

The view from the roof of the Newseum was sweeping and a different experience. Inside the museum was captivating as we drifted to one huge news story after another throughout our visit. The Pulitzer Prize photo gallery ought to have tissues nearby for tear-jerker photos you won’t forget soon. Some are fun, but many are heart-wrenching so be prepared.

Summer is a busy time in DC and you might even get lucky like we did and stumble upon a farmer’s market. If you can make it in the spring or fall I think you will have a more relaxed visit. There are less tourists and the lines at the free Smithsonian museums are not as long.
Gobs of free museums and great restaurants keep me coming back again and again.
