On a trip to wrap up the last two states I hadn’t been to our route took me and big brother Vic through Bowman, SD. It was a foggy, and chilly day when we drove through, and when we reached the north side of town… it looked like a circus from space had crashed and set up shop. I wasn’t driving fast when we saw all manner of strange sculptures standing tall and weird in the prairie, but I slowed down and then did a U-turn to see and photograph the bridge, planes and odd bits someone put up for all to see.
I mean, what would you do if you looked out the window and saw a skelaton dressed in rancher clothing sporting an automatic rifle and straddling a rocket perched in the back of a pickup truck? Yes, you too would stop and gawk. Maybe they have a hidden camera to catch the looks of innocent passers by as they stare in disbelief of this display.
Perhaps it is just one big recycling project? Having worked as an aircraft mechanic I know even old airplanes have some valuable parts so when I saw the two planes attached to the old, relocated bridge I wondered if someone had more money than they needed to park the planes like this?
It was all good fun and we appreciated the break in the same prairie view mile-after-mile. I supposed it was for the benefit of the locals as much as those like us that were just passing through. I can say it was great fun to see the sculpture park in Bowman, SD. Traveling is such good sport!
